What’s the Deal With Stainless Steel?

Why do people want high use appliances to be stainless steel when they are coated with fingerprints and require constant cleaning? Why are stainless steel refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, and ranges on many house hunters’ wish lists?

Many clients worry that stainless steel is the next “avocado green” and will eventually make their kitchen look dated. Here are some reasons why I think it’s a trend that’s here to stay:

  • Stainless steel is a mid-tone neutral that is somewhat reflective and goes with finishes from dark cherry to white washed oak

  • White appliances can be stark and glaring in a dark-toned kitchen

  • Black appliances can become a black hole—disrupting the visual flow

  • Cabinet panels work on refrigerators and dishwashers but ovens and cooktops are often stainless steel anyway.

  • Matching cabinet panels can be an expensive custom touch

  • And lastly, stainless steel still suggests professional-grade, quality, and durability – although they are now available in a range of quality and price for home use

So get out the spray cleaner and stock up paper towels! Stainless steel appliances are likely to be popular for a long time to come.

Designer’s note:

Personally, I get tired of all that stainless (and the work to keep it looking nice). I much prefer paneled appliances (especially refrigerators because of their large size). Some brands are even offering ranges and ovens in color: Check out: Aga and Bluestar, just to name a few.
